SUMMARY> ow to restore full backup over new partition if tape is not in st.conf

Here's my post:

Hi Sun Managers,

I've got a 4mm tape that is not in the st.conf file from Solaris 2.5. I did
add the lines so that this tape is working under solaris 2.5.

My question is :

If I want to restore a full backup of /usr from that tape, I must boot
of the cdrom and mount that partition over /mnt and do a full restore.
But this tape is not working under vanilla st.conf file...

What can I do ? Is there a way to modify the st.conf file from the
mini-root booted from the cdrom and load that config again ?

Thank's.

Simon.

A lot of person suggest to used a second drive to do backup on that drive and modify /etc/vfstab to use that second drive. After that, you can boot with the new drive, modify the original one and go back.

Second solution is to keep a copy of the new st.conf. When you boot from cdrom, after that you can do a modload of the file st.conf. See the man page for modload.

I used the first one, but I'm still curious to know if the second solution REALLY works well... In case of a real crash...

Here's the reply i did received:

Simadro,

I suggest that you do a "workaround", like restoring /usr to a directory ( like /home/usr, for example ) from your 4mm tape, then boot from cdrom and mount /usr and /home/usr and restore /usr that way, for example,

1.) boot from cdrom

# mkdir /mnt1 # mount /dev/dsk/whatever_usr_is /mnt # mount /dev/dsk/whatever_homeusr_is /mnt1 # cd /mnt # ufsdump 0f - /mnt1 | ufsrestore vrf -

This should do it. Good Luck !!

Simon, Actually, there's an easier way to do this. You need to have a spare partition of the same size as your current /usr partition. If you can still boot from your HD, do it. That way you have the modified st.conf file. Now, mount a _new_ usr partition in /mnt. Leaving the current one be. Do your restore and modify /etc/vfstab to point to this new partition for /usr. When you reboot, you'll have your restored /usr. Good luck.

Best Regards, Todd

Simon: I have the same situation with my APS Python 4mm tapde drive, I dont believe 4.1.x has kernal support for it, I need to modify st_conf.c and rebuild the kernel for it to work properly. A local sysadmin said I still may be able to read from the tape device with the kernel unable to recognize the tape drive but I share your concern. I assume this is a similar situation. I've never had to do this, but ... mini root is installed in swap on the local disk from the cd, so there's no real reason I can see why you couldn't modify st.conf

You can boot the mini-root, and then mount the disk root as /mnt2 or something so that you can copy the tape driver and install it in the mini-root for the restore. <><Randall Grimshaw
