Reply 1:

This is just a guess. I know that X-servers like to see thier clients over a
fairly fast connection. If your user is using X-ware at home, I would venture
to guess it is at 38400 or slower. It would appear that the server (or client)
whichever you want to think of them, is trying to get information from the
other end, which is too slow to get it there in time for the display to make
the proper decisions. Either that, or the data had been corrupted in process.
 In this case it lost the width or height of the intended xterm display. Since
it had no hieght, it couldn't be displayed. For X-ware, the xterm is the
controlling window. If this is corrupted, it will simply die.

There may be a way to designate to the X-display that its connection is over a
wan, but I have not experimented with it enough to know.

Don't know if this helps, but you did ask for guesses.

Looks like the serial link drops out first, and then everything gets
killed (as it should). It might be a noisy phone line, interference or
something like that.
