My question was: is it possible to do RADIUS authentication with free
software. The answer was a resounding yes..
Here are two sites:
> Livingston http://www.livingston.com/Forms/one-click-dnload.html
> Merit http://www.merit.edu/radius/
We use the RADIUS package from Livingston to serve passwords from our UNIX box
to a USR modem pool.. its working perfectly so far.
Thanks to everyone who responded! As usual, my thank yous are badly
delayed... your messageas are attached for everyone's edification..

Yep. You might want to take a look at our Merit AAA Server (which
also supports TACACS, BTW!)
It is available for a license fee and for no charge in a slightly
reduced form. Good luck!

There are several free radius servers.
The most popular are Livingston and Merit versions. The both are based
on the livingston code (Livingston developed radius). Merit, I believe, has
has done its own things to Radius. We are using Ascend Max dialin
servers and Ascend has a radius server based on Livingston's code. Works
well.

Check out www.livingston.com
They have a version of radius (1.16) that's free for taking. I believe
you can get it as source, or precompiled binary.
Good Luck!

Walter,
We use Merit Radius. They have both a free version and a commercial
version(we use the free one).
its at " ftp.merit.edu".
Also, the inventors of RADIUS, Livinston Communications has their RADIUS
Software at "ftp.livingston.com"
Even though I use Livingston Term Servers, I haven't used this product. It
has some enhancements in it that can only be used by Livingston's latest
COMOS, so I'm not sure how it'll work with USR's OS(which used to be an old
buggy version of COMOS licensed from Livingston).
Also, the feature you mentioned (using the unix passwd file ) is statndard
in all RADIUS implementations
For example, our Merit radius user file contains the following(among other
things):
DEFAULT Authentication-Type = Unix-PW
Filter-Id = "unlim",
Service-Type = Framed,
Framed-Protocol = PPP,
Framed-IP-Netmask = 255.255.255.0,
Framed-Routing = None,
Framed-MTU = 1500,
Framed-Compression = Van-Jacobson-TCP-IP
dwoodruf
bcaisse
lenit
What this does, is set up a PPP connection for the users dwoodruf, bcaisse,
lenit, etc., when the get autheticated, and the passwd information comes
from the UNIX Passwd file.
Hope this helps.

Merit has one, take a look at http://www.merit.edu/aaa/basicsvr.html

attached mail follows:
Yes there is
Look for Radius 1.16 is a FREEWARE version of RADIUS.
Radius 2.0 and 2.0.1 are for Livingston customsers only.
There are other versions (Merit RADIUS and Emerald for NT).
