Thanks to all who replied! (Jeff Brody, Benjamin Cline, Robert
Gillespie, Charlie Mengler, and Peter Wargo.)

Original question:

Dear Managers,

we are considering a purchase of an Exabyte 8700LT tape drive.
If anybody is using them with solaris systems, please, I'd
appreciate any comments, good or bad. Also, if you have any
alternative suggestions concerning backup systems, I'd appreciate
them too. We are looking for a tape backup which is not outrageously
expensive (below $3000) to backup home directories (they occupy
8G of space). Thanks a lot!

Responses were three in favor of using DLT drives instead and two as
follows:

>From Benjamin Cline: "my preferred drive is one of the new 12/24 GB
DDS-3 (DAT) drives."

>From Charlie Mengler: "You can get a 4mm DAT DDS-3 drive that holds
12GB (uncompressed) for $1000 - $1500.

www.insight.com is just one vendor where it can be found."

On the subject of DLT drives, Peter Wargo says:

"It offers 20G native, 40G compressed, and is a HELL of a lot faster than
8mm...

I think Solar Systems has used 4000's that might do the trick, try:
http:/www.solarsys.com, if you call, as for a guy named Don Black.
He's done us well before.

(Plus, if your system is on maint, and you buy a used Sun tape drive,
you can get it fixed under your contract.)"

Robert Gillespie says:
"I have been using these drives for 5 years they are reliable and
fast!!!

I have also been using the same tapes over and over, I don't think
you could do tht with any helical scan devices (DAT/Exabyte etc)

I have been purchasing all my tape drives and disks from a US company
for many many years.

R.A.R.E Systems 713 467 7273 Montie Timms or Steve Southwell"

Jeff Brody adds that DLT tapes cost ~$70.
