A few responses to this problem, and only one of
them (Ronald Loftin, reloftin@mailbox.syr.edu)
pointed in the right direction.
Several said that Solaris 2.5.1 HW 11/97 was required,
but I already had this as mentioned in my initial mail.
Solution:
On the Solaris 2.5.1 HW 11/97 CD (and similar on the 2.6 CD)
there is a maintenance upgrade which has to be applied to
each diskless client before they are willing to boot:
cd /cdrom/cdrom0/s0/MU
./install_mu -R /export/root/client_name
This has to be done for each client, and took a long time
(more than an hour) but then the client boots properly.
After this solution was found, our local Sun support has found
that applying patches 104628-05 and 105004-09 with admclientpatch
also makes booting of diskless Ultra 5 and 10 with Solaris 2.5.1
HW 11/97 work. Probably this is faster than the maintenance upgrade.
