Thanks, all!
There's a general consensus that the built in battety in the EPROM is dead
or dying.
Sridhar M at Siemens Semiconductor says that the procedure to reset the
EPROM is :
"You can reset the EEPROM pressing STOP/L1 & N (e.g. shift-N) key
simultaneously when you power on. You can set environment again in the OK
prompt. They will remain until you powerdown the system."
Nadya Williams reports that :
I was just reading an article in UNIX Review's Performance Computing
(march) called "Old workstation never die". The author mentions a few places
where one can find an old workstation or parts. For sun these are
newsgroups:
misc.forsale.computers.workstation
comp.sys.sun.wanted
comp.sys.next.marketplace
Miller Sutfin [msutfin@mho.net] referred me to "Catalyst Systems and
Peripherals".

Subject: We don't want to give up our 470 quite yet ... but we're
getting EPROM checksum errors.
We have a Sparc server model 470 that's still doing some useful work.
Lately it's started reporting EPROM checksum errors, and refuses to boot.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to where one might find a replacement
EPROM for this machine? Does anyone have any suggestions at all (apart from
"buy a new machine").
Will summarize.
