I'm not going to "name names" because I got sooooooo many (non) answers.
Many people suggested pkginfo -l but, I'm sorry, that's not very helpful in
describing what a package does, nor why I might want to install it.
A fair number of "me too" notes
A lot of "you just have to 'know'" kinds of answers
and a general concensus that there is not a single place where there is a
paragraph or 2 describing in "enough" detail what each package does.
On a personal note. I find it utterly amazing that a company like Sun
doesn't make fundamental information like that available.
