Here is a summary regarding the unqualified hostname and there were many.
All I had to do was put the fully qualified name in hosts and we were all
set.

1. Make sure the local machine has an entry in /etc/hosts.
2. Make sure hostname.le0 (hme0, whatever) exists and has the
unqualified hostname of the machine.
3. Check /etc/sendmail.cf for the line Dw<hostname>, ie if my hostname
is eagle I would have Dweagle.
4. Check /etc/sendmail.cf for Dj<domain>
5. If you are running NIS make sure Dm<localNIShostname> exists in
/etc/sendmail.cf
6. If all else fails, check out the cf/README at www.sendmail.org

Add a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) in the /etc/hosts file for
the host running sendmail; such as
123.123.123.123 postoffice.mydomain.com postoffice

put the fully qualified host name (Not just the short name) in the
/etc/hosts file. I actually put 'em both. On startup sendmail does
not look at the /etc/nsswitch.conf file -- the machine isn't up enough
yet.
you can either put the FQDN in /etc/hosts or just put a "." after the
hostname in /etc/hosts.
