Subject: 670 to Sparc 10/20
According to all doc's from Ross and several people using Ross chips, the
cpu's will work in the 10 and/or 20. I haven't tried it yet because the
chips are still in use but it sounds pretty conclusive. PROM chip 2.22.1H
needs to be installed in the 20 for these cpu's to work.
The RAM is another matter. The testimony is that it will not work in a 10
or 20 but only in much older machines (like the IPC, Sparc 1, Sparc 2,
etc.). Since I don't have any of those I'm going to be out 256 MB's.
Bummer.
Several people said to just keep it and patch up 2.5.1 and use it as a file
and/or print server. I would like that but those services are handled by
Novel and are not up for negotiation. Besides, it's a boat anchor and a
Sparc 20 can pretty much replace it without incident from a performance
standpoint (with some more RAM of course).
One point to note: I was told that the 670 will run 2.6 but only in
uni-processor mode, not multi.

Subject: 670 to Sparc 10/20
Greetings all,
I have a 670 that is going to be retired soon. It is running 2.5.1 and
has dual processors and 256 MB RAM. I am wondering if these are
transferable to another machine?
uname -a gives:
SunOS host 5.5.1 Generic_103640-14 sun4m sparc SUNW,SPARCsystem-600
psrinfo -v gives:
Status of processor 0 as of: 05/24/99 17:21:47
Processor has been on-line since 05/18/99 17:59:22.
The sparc processor operates at 125 MHz,
and has a sparc floating point processor.
Status of processor 2 as of: 05/24/99 17:21:47
Processor has been on-line since 05/18/99 17:59:26.
The sparc processor operates at 125 MHz,
and has a sparc floating point processor.
and this is a cut from prtconf that pertains to the cpu's:
Ross,RT625 (driver not attached)
Ross,RT625 (driver not attached)
Seems like a waste to retire the cpu's and memory if I can use it
elsewhere. If I can't use it elsewhere, will the 670 run 2.6? I know
SUN doesn't support it but if it runs I might as well keep it around.
Thanks,
Jeff Kennedy
